Old-Fashioned Southern Buttermilk Pie
Old-Fashioned Southern Buttermilk Pie is a classic custard-style pie with a smooth, creamy filling and a lightly tangy flavor from buttermilk. Simple pantry ingredients come together to create a comforting dessert that’s perfect for holidays or everyday treats.
Ingredients: 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust, 1½ cups granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ cup unsalted butter melted and cooled slightly, 3 large eggs room temperature, 1 cup buttermilk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and optional ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg.
To prepare the pie, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt. Add the melted butter and mix until smooth.
Beat in the eggs one at a time until fully incorporated. Stir in the buttermilk and vanilla extract, mixing until the filling is smooth and well blended. If using, sprinkle in the nutmeg.
Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust and smooth the top.
Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the center is set and lightly golden. If the edges of the crust brown too quickly, cover them loosely with foil.
Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool completely before slicing. Serve at room temperature or chilled.
