Creamed Chipped Beef

Description:
Creamed chipped beef is a classic, old-fashioned comfort food made with dried beef in a rich, creamy white sauce. Traditionally served over toast, this hearty dish has been a breakfast and supper favorite for generations.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz jar or package dried beef, sliced or torn into pieces

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • Black pepper to taste

  • Toast or biscuits, for serving

Instructions

  1. Rinse dried beef briefly under cold water to remove excess salt. Pat dry and slice or tear into bite-size pieces.

  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.

  3. Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, to form a smooth roux.

  4. Gradually whisk in milk, stirring until smooth and thickened.

  5. Add dried beef and cook 2–3 minutes until heated through.

  6. Season with black pepper. Taste before adding salt, as dried beef is salty.

  7. Serve hot over toast or biscuits.

Tips and Variations

  • Add a pinch of nutmeg for a traditional touch.

  • Stir in a tablespoon of cream for extra richness.

  • Serve over hash browns or English muffins for a hearty meal.
