Philly Meatloaf with Cheese

Description:
Philly meatloaf with cheese is a hearty, flavorful twist on classic meatloaf inspired by a Philly cheesesteak. Juicy ground beef is mixed with sautéed peppers and onions, then stuffed and topped with melted cheese for a comforting, crowd-pleasing dinner.

Ingredients

Meatloaf

  • 1½ pounds ground beef

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

  • ½ cup milk

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Cheese Filling & Topping

  • 1½ cups shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese

  • ½ cup sliced mushrooms (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a loaf pan or line with foil.

  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms (if using) until softened. Let cool slightly.

  3. In a large bowl, mix breadcrumbs and milk until soaked.

  4. Add eggs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

  5. Gently mix in ground beef and sautéed vegetables until just combined.

  6. Press half of the meat mixture into the prepared pan.

  7. Sprinkle half of the cheese evenly over the meat.

  8. Top with remaining meat mixture and seal edges.

  9. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes.

  10. Remove from oven, sprinkle remaining cheese on top, and return to oven.

  11. Bake an additional 15–20 minutes until cooked through and cheese is melted.

  12. Let rest 10 minutes before slicing.

Tips and Variations

  • Use thinly sliced provolone for an authentic Philly flavor.

  • Add a layer of steak sauce or ketchup before the final cheese topping.

  • Serve with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or on a sandwich roll.
