Dolly’s Chicken and Stuffing Casserole is pure comfort food at its best. Creamy, savory chicken filling topped with buttery, herbed stuffing creates a cozy, satisfying dish that’s perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or make-ahead meals. It’s easy, hearty, and made with simple pantry staples—exactly the kind of recipe you come back to again and again.

Ingredients

Chicken Filling

  • 3 cups cooked chicken, shredded or cubed

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • ½ cup chicken broth

  • 1 small onion, finely diced (optional)

  • ½ cup celery, finely chopped (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley

Stuffing Topping

  • 1 box (6 oz) Stove Top stuffing mix

  • 1½ cups chicken broth

  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 2: Make the Chicken Filling

In a large bowl, combine the cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom (or celery) soup, sour cream, and chicken broth until smooth.

Stir in the cooked chicken, onion, celery (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, thyme, and parsley. Mix until well combined.

Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.

Step 3: Prepare the Stuffing

In a separate bowl, mix the stuffing mix with chicken broth and melted butter. Stir gently until moistened but not mushy.

Step 4: Assemble

Spoon the stuffing mixture evenly over the chicken filling, gently spreading it across the top without pressing down.

Step 5: Bake

Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the casserole is hot, bubbly, and the stuffing is lightly golden.

Step 6: Rest and Serve

Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow it to set slightly.

Tips & Variations

  • Use rotisserie chicken for extra flavor and convenience

  • Add frozen peas or carrots to the filling for extra color

  • For a richer dish, mix ½ cup shredded cheddar into the filling

  • Cover loosely with foil if stuffing browns too quickly

  • Assemble up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate before baking

Serving Suggestions

Serve with:

  • Green beans or steamed broccoli

  • Cranberry sauce for a classic touch

  • A simple garden salad

  • Warm dinner rolls or biscuits

Storage & Reheating

  • Refrigerate leftovers up to 4 days

  • Reheat in oven at 350°F (175°C) or microwave until warmed through

  • Freezes well for up to 2 months (thaw overnight before reheating)

Final Thoughts

Dolly’s Chicken and Stuffing Casserole is the definition of comfort—creamy, savory, and incredibly easy to make. Whether it’s a busy weeknight or a Sunday family dinner, this casserole brings warmth and familiarity to the table every time.
