Ingredients

3½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

1¼ cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)

2 tablespoons sugar

1½ teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons oil or melted butter
Instructions

In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Stir in oil and salt.

Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.

Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover and let rise 1–1½ hours, until doubled.

Punch down dough and shape into a loaf.

Place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes.

Bake for 30–35 minutes, until top is golden and loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
