Southern Fried Cornbread
Southern Fried Cornbread is a classic, old-fashioned side dish with a crisp golden crust and a tender, slightly crumbly center. Pan-fried in a skillet, this cornbread is perfect alongside beans, greens, or hearty comfort meals.
Ingredients: 1 cup yellow cornmeal, ½ cup all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon sugar (optional), 1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 large egg, ¾ cup buttermilk, and oil or bacon grease for frying.
To prepare the cornbread, heat about ¼ inch of oil or bacon grease in a heavy skillet over medium heat.
In a mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar if using, baking powder, and salt. Add the egg and buttermilk and stir until a thick batter forms.
Once the oil is hot, drop spoonfuls of batter into the skillet and gently flatten each one slightly.
Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning.
Remove the cornbread from the skillet and drain on paper towels. Serve warm.
